The minutes and days after a crash matter. Here is a practical checklist.
At the scene
- Call 911 and get medical help — even if you feel fine.
- Photograph the vehicles, the road, the signals and any injuries.
- Exchange insurance information and get witnesses' names and numbers.
In the days after
- Report the crash: in Massachusetts you must file a Motor Vehicle Crash Operator Report within five days if anyone was injured or damage exceeds $1,000.
- Notify your own insurer and open a PIP claim.
- Follow your treatment plan and keep every bill and receipt.
Don't give a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer before talking to a lawyer.
